5–9 July 2010

Presented by the University of Oxford Department of Public Health and the Department for Continuing Education this course is designed to introduce participants to topics central to current global health research and to provide an understanding of the principles, methods and practice of global health.

  • Research Methods – Introduction to Epidemiological Studies, Systematic Reviews and Meta- Analysis
  • Designing and Evaluating Public Health Programmes
  • Ethics for Global Health
  • Using Evidence in Decision-Making
  • Measuring Health

Purpose

The Global Health Summer School will aid in developing appropriate skills in relation to participants’ work in global and public health and to help participants understand how research evidence, ethical frameworks and programme evaluation can impact on and be used in global and public health.

Format

The Summer School consists of three units spread over five days, with participants attending all three units. Each day will begin with a key plenary session on a global health topic, following which participants will cover further topics with linked themes. Study is intensive, with lectures and small group-work as the main teaching methods. The emphasis will be on discussion and interactive learning, and the course will follow a problem-based learning approach illustrated by published research from global health literature.

Who is it for?

The Summer School is aimed at graduates who are considering further study in global health (such as Oxford's MSc in Global Health Science) with some recent experience in international health in either developing or developed countries, those working in multidisciplinary public health and in health policy.

Objectives

  • To provide participants with an overall introduction to the topic of Global Health Science
  • To aid in developing appropriate skills in relation to participants' work in global and public health
  • To help participants understand how research evidence, ethical frameworks and programme evaluation can impact on and be used in global and public health
